Observing Strange Attractors

Elemente technologischer Verschiebung

Vertrauen

The entanglement of everyday life with algorithms, the political influence of big data analysis or the omnipresence of bots in social networks repeatedly pose the question of how trustworthy the reality we experience actually is. Recent discussions on the blockchain technology have raised hopes for a new way of building and maintaining trust. According to this vision, socio-political processes are outsourced into technological structures and power of agency is automatically distributed among heterogeneous social actors via these structures. The blockchain holds the promise of managing trust decentralised, efficiently and without the influence of old forms of power, making it scalable and ultimately replacing it with transparency.

But what is the relationship between trust and technology? Couldn't trust itself be understood as social and political technology? After all, it makes contingencies, risks and uncertainties manageable. The connection can be recognized through the social form of the ritual. Put simply, it describes recurring processes of mutual recognition and certainty. At the technical level, the counterpart would be the protocol, which defines how processes and actions are carried out. How do these two social forms relate to each other in their ability to build trust and regularity, to grant advances of trust and to (re-)structure the world? If trust in general is the basis for the constitution of social interaction enabling the development of communities, how exactly can the technological condition of these relationships of trust be grasped?

As part of the series Observing Strange Attractors we want to explore these questions in the workshop. Blockchain, however, should not be understood as a fundamental solution to the "trust problem", but as a strange, yet powerful attractor that paradigmatically reorganizes milieus of trust and their social structures.

Fiktionen

The last event of our Observing Strange Attractors-series investigates how fictions in philosophy, art and literature shape the way we establish relations to the world. According to Niklas Luhmann (Literatur als fiktionale Realität, 2008), fictions enable a re-entry of the difference between fictional and real reality into itself. They make reality appear contingent and reconfigure the relationship between compossible and incompossible states of the world. The scope of possible realities explodes, creating an excess of sense. The technological developments of the 20th century have had a lasting impact on sense itself, opening up a culture of sense bound to signification, representation and work towards a culture of sense that is inherently relational, exposed to its originary technicity and is distributed environmentally. This shift is what Erich Hörl calls the technological displacement of sense (Die technologische Bedingung, 2011).

What spaces of possibility are created through contemporary fictions and how can we understand them in the context of a technological displacement of sense? The OSA event on Fictions addresses this question on different scales and traces the potential of fictions from the inside of the body through interactions in networks towards outer space.

The first part of the afternoon deals with the merging of technology and the body, treating it as a subjective crisis and a source for theoretical knowledge production. With Dennis Schep we will take a closer look at Jean-Luc Nancy’s The Intruder (2000). Subsequently, we will discover the strategies of the ∞OS Bodymind operating system, developed by Dmitry Paranyushkin. The goal of ∞OS is to manipulate cognitive patterns through movement cycles inspired from dance and martial arts. The last part of the day inquires into fantasies of planetary migration and their gendered implications, drawing from the research of Réka Patrícia Gál. We will end the day with a collective dinner and drinks.

Dennis Schep: Auto-Fictions in Philosophy
In the first part of the workshop, we will explore the porosity and fictionality of the contemporary body with the help of Jean-Luc Nancy's text about his heart transplant, The Intruder (2000). We will work through the text together, so no preparation is required.
Dennis Schep finished his PhD on autobiographical fragments in theoretical texts at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2016, the book will hopefully come out this year. Since 2017 he has been working on Bravos Foundry, a para-academic project / artist residency in an abandoned village in Spain.

Dmitry Paranyushkin: ∞OS bodymind operating system
∞OS is an open-source software for individuals and organizations. At its core lies a set of principles (adaptivity, ∞-variability, resilience, modularity) that we use to experiment with. Through physical practice of the body we implement it into our everyday behavior. We combine complex system science, technology, dance, Systema martial art and artistic practices to cultivate a new kind of aesth/et(h)ics based on ecological interaction, confluence and evolutionary creative flow.
Dmitry invents software and artistic tools that can be used both by humans and machines. His main focus is on developing things that spur creativity, stimulate imagination and enhance perception. Having presented his work at Palais de Tokyo, Martin Gropius Bau, Brut, TEDx and re:publica, he is currently working on the bodymind operating system ∞OS and on the cognitive diversity stimulation tool InfraNodus. Dmitry was born in 1981 in Moscow and studied economics and maths (BA), as well as theatre, contemporary dance, biology and life sciences (MA). He also works as a senior researcher at Nodus Labs exploring applications of network science in the social and educational contexts.

Réka Patrícia Gál: (S)Exit Fictions
Deforestation, nuclear waste, insecticide, climate change: the contemporary discourse on the changing environmental factors on Earth has ushered in apocalyptic visions of human future on the planet. Amongst the proposed options to ensure humanity’s survival is the concept of the colonization of other planets, which is a consistently recurring topic in political and entrepreneurial discourses. Spaceflight in the 21st century has become a belief system, a cultural institution in North America that rests on utopian polemics backed by scientists, politicians, and private space companies that claim to provide a way out of the planetary crisis through the escape to other planets. This narrative is especially ironic at a time when the world is already dealing with a very real crisis of migration, which is already heightened by climate change and its environmental, social and economic consequences. The recurring Malthusian polemic evoked by claims of overpopulation and ecological collapse presents an image of a planet already ruined, and the solution presented by proponents of outer space colonization is not one of earthly survival, but of planetary exit. How have we arrived here? How have other planets come to be seen as possible places of habitat? The aim of this workshop is to trace and dissect the historical stages through which these outer space colonial fantasies evolved, from Ancient Greece until the 18th century.
Réka Patrícia Gál is a Master's student in Cultural Studies at Humboldt-University of Berlin. Her research focuses on exploring how technological tools and scientific methods are employed to purportedly solve socio-political problems. In the 2014/15 winter term, she taught the seminar Rethinking Adaptations: The Impact of New Media and Fan Culture on Narratives and Society through the bologna.lab in Berlin.

About

DE

EN
texture was founded in May 2018 as an open collective and is dedicated to the work on theoretical questions of the present. Among the founding members are Jakob Claus, Niklas Egberts, Moritz Klein, Hannah Schmedes and Timo Schröder. The aim of texture is to establish a platform for scientific, artistic and political research practices and their exchange that exists outside conventional institutions. There is a special interest in small and open event formats that enable common discussion and exchange.

The term "texture" comes from Latin textura: fabric, and refers to the structure of a surface or the characteristics of a context. Texture refers to the dramaturgical structure of a theatre play as well as the spatial distribution of structural elements of a rock or elements from 3D computer graphics. The term spans across a multitude of different fields of knowledge, but always suggests the challenge of making the threshold spaces between order and disorder and the relationship between material and form describable.
